At the Utah Senate, Senator Shiozawa serves at the chair of the appropriations committee for Business, Economic Development, and Labor. Additionally, he serves on the Social Services appropriations committee, Senate Health and Human Services Committee, and the Senate Natural Resources, Agriculture, and Environment Committee.
During the 2016 legislative session, Senator Shiozawa successfully passed the Assault Offense Amendments bill, which increases the penalty for substantially assaulting emergency medical workers or health care providers. Additionally, he passed a concurrent resolution, which was cosponsored by every member of the Utah Senate, to urge the reclassification of medical marijuana, and this legislation encouraged Utah research facilities to conduct research on the benefits and side effects of the use of medical marijuana.
Senator Brian Shiozawa has received several awards and recognitions for his service in the Utah Senate. Last year, he received the 2016 Public Service Award from the Utah chapter of the American Society for Public Administration for his work on health care legislation. He also received the Visionary Leadership Award from the Columbus Community Center for his work with the autism community. This awards, among many others, have shown Senator Shiozawa’s dedication to improving the lives of Utahns.
